The 1957 Escambia County Blue Devils were chosen Class AA State Champions by the Birmingham News from District 1.
Escambia County had been a powerhouse in South Alabama for years and finally captured their first state title from the Birmingham News. The Blue Devils rushed for 3,106 yards while completing 11 of 33 passes for another 288 yards.
They held their opponents to 950 yards rushing and 318 yards passing as they could only complete 20 of 77 passes with 11 interceptions. The defense was led by all-state tackle Wendell Barnes.
Lefty Cochrane led the Blue Devils by scoring 11 touchdowns while Lou Vickery tallied 10 scores. Coach A.R. Holmes arrived in Atmore in 1952 and has led Escambia County to a 45-8-7 record since then.
